Joe Parillo Trio to perform at URI

KINGSTON, R.I. — January 14, 2000 — Jazz lovers are in for a treat. The Joe Parillo Trio will play original music from its compact disc Morning in the Garden and standards from the American Songbook at the University of Rhode Island on Friday, Feb. 4 in URI’s Fine Arts Recital Hall. The trio’s appearance, scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., is sponsored by URI’s Music Department’s University Artist Series. General admission is $6, senior citizens $5, and students with an identification will be admitted free. Call 874-2431 for more information. Pianist and composer Joe Parillo holds a master’s degree in composition from the New England Conservatory of Music and has written and arranged music for theater and film. His most recent work, Rhode Island Remembers, has aired on WSBE-TV, Channel 36. Parillo has been commissioned to write three jazz ballets and has arranged and recorded more than 25 full-length children’s productions, including the music, lyrics and book for his musical, With A Twist. Parillo also produced SongBook, Clouds, and most recently, the compact discs Almost Carefree, Block Island Summer, for his ensemble and co-wrote and produced the gospel CD, Meditations of the Heart. Additionally, he has recorded two compact discs with the Sonic Explorers, a Worcester-based group. His Christmas compact discAngels Gather with saxophonist David Key, and his latest trio’s compact disc Morning In The Garden, are available through his own Neoga Records label. Parillo has recently completed a MasterClass CD for JazzPlayer Magazine and writes a jazz column, Spontaneous Inventions, for the Rhode Island Music Educators Review, published quarterly. He toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra and is currently director of Jazz Studies at URI and an active member of the BMI Lehman-Engel Musical Theater Workshops in New York. In 1998, Parillo joined the Steinway Artists’ roster. Bassist Gerry Wilfong has performed in the New England area for the past 25 years. As a freelance musician, Wilfong is the first call for many jazz groups in the Boston and Worcester areas. Drummer/vibraphonist Mike Connors has worked extensively throughout New England. He has done two national broadway tours and is also a member of the Sonic Explorers and Combustible Edison touring the United States and Europe.
