KINGSTON, R.I. — November 25, 2003 — An international leader opposed to globalization and an advocate of democratic control of financial markets and institutions will be the last speaker in this fall’s highly successful University of Rhode Island Honors Colloquium.
Bernard Cassen, director general of Paris-based Le Monde Diplomatique, a monthly magazine published in 24 languages with worldwide circulation of 1.5 million, will lecture on “Globalization and Social Justice,” on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.
Like all lectures in the program, entitled “The Futures of Globalization,” Cassen’s presentation will be free and open to the public and will be held in Room 271 of the Chafee Social Science Center.
Cassen is a founding member and honorary president of ATTAC, L’association pour la Taxe Tobin pour l’Aide au Citoyens, co-founder of the World Social Forum and professor emeritus, Institut of European Studies, University Paris VIII (Vincennes).
The New Left Review called him “the founder of the single most successful movement against neoliberal globalization” in its January-February 2003 issue. In the interview, Cassen said ATTAC was founded in 1998 and has 30,000 members to fight what he calls the “dictatorship of the financial markets.”
In a January 2001 article in Le Monde Diplomatique headlined “Frightening the free marketeers,” Cassen says the “whole neo-liberal universe is plagued by a nagging doubt. What if – despite ceaseless claims to the contrary – the form of globalisation driven by financial markets and multinational giants is not irreversible? The free-market gospel had already been shaken by the successful mass protests against the WTO and the IMF. Now demonstrations in Nice have rubbed salt in the wound. Adopting exactly the same strategy as their opponents, the anti-globalisation movements realise that national struggles must be based on international alliances and consensus.”
