Talk is part of URI’s fall Honors Colloquium

KINGSTON, R.I. – October 8, 2010 – Kareem Shora, a senior policy advisor in the Department of Homeland Security and former national executive director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee will speak at the University of Rhode Island Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. His lecture, “A Civil Society: Can We Protect The Right and Liberties of All Communities,” will be delivered in Edwards Auditorium, 64 Upper College Road, Kingston. The talk, free and open to the public, is part of URI’s ongoing Honors Colloquium on RACE. Those unable to attend the lecture can watch it live by going to www.uri.edu.

“Shora was chosen to speak by the colloquium coordinators because of his leadership and work at the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee, which tries to educate and prevent unfair discrimination and stereotyping of Arabs and Arab-Americans,” said Gail Faris, assistant director of student life and the Women’s Center and one of the colloquium coordinators. “It was important to the committee to include a speaker of Arab decent because of misunderstandings, prejudice, and profiling that have historically existed, but have increased since 9/11.
