KINGSTON, R.I. — November 22, 2006 — The Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association at the University of Rhode Island, representing a Greek system with more than 1,300 members, have donated $10,000 to benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. The foundation helps local breast cancer organizations raise awareness, work for prevention, and bring comfort and help to patients and their families in the Rhode Island community. URI students, members of the fraternity and sorority systems, raised the money this fall during their annual Philanthropy Week, highlighted by such fundraising activities as game shows, contests, and a date auction. Students participated in renditions of MTV’s popular programs “Singled Out” and “My Own.” In addition, each day the various Greek chapters waged “Penny Wars” with the hopes of outdoing the competition and attaining the highest number of pennies.

Philanthropy Week was founded in 2003 to benefit local Rhode Island charities. Past recipients have been the Katie E. Decubellis Memorial Fund, Habitat for Humanity, and the Alpha-1 foundation.
