KINGSTON, R.I. — November 8, 2010 — Governor Donald L. Carcieri will present the first in his Public Policy Lecture Series focused on engaging the next generation of leaders to contribute to Rhode Island’s success on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at the University of Rhode Island. The lecture will be held following the topping-out ceremony to commemorate a milestone in the construction of the University’s new College of Pharmacy Building.

The lecture will be at 12.30 p.m. in the Thomas M. Ryan Family Auditorium of the Center for Biotechnology and Life Sciences, 120 Flagg Road, Kingston Campus. The topping-out ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on the plaza between the Chafee Social Science Center and the Center for Biotechnology and Life Sciences. The events are free and open to the public.


Gov. Carcieri will speak about the new horizons that have now been opened for the state in such areas as biotechnology, marine sciences, renewable energy, life sciences, and advanced manufacturing. He will highlight how public policy and practice has put Rhode Island in a position to prosper in these areas, and, he will outline what the next steps must be if Rhode Island is to continue to follow a course that leads to a bright future.

During his tenure Gov. Carcieri took several actions to encourage this development. He has reformed fundamental elements of public education and in particular, he has improved the way mathematics and science are approached in the elementary and secondary schools, developed new supports for teachers of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and given a central role to the Science Advisory and Technology Council. He also made significant infrastructure investments in higher education and transportation that will support science and technology progress, and made a firm commitment to renewable energy.

In order to give Rhode Islanders the ability to engage in a global marketplace, he has joined the forces of government and academia, researchers and investors, entrepreneurs and industries, in order to enliven the science and technology sectors in the Rhode Island economy.
