Get a leg up: URI kicks off Walk-A-While-on-Wednesdays, a new health initiative to get people on campus moving

KINGSTON, R.I., – September 27, 2013 – The University of Rhode Island is launching a new Rhode-to-Health Initiative that involves lacing up some comfortable walking shoes and stepping out in the fresh air.

Lunchtime strolls around campus, called Walk-A-While-on-Wednesdays, will kick off this Wednesday, October 2, at noon. (Rain date is October 9.)

The University community is invited to join President David M. Dooley and Provost Donald H. DeHayes on the Quad near the entrance to Quinn Hall. Walks will feature walking coaches from the Department of Kinesiology to guide participants. They will be giving out maps of walking paths that have varying lengths so walkers can find a path that is perfect for them. All fitness levels are welcome.

“The faculty and students in our health programs, including Kinesiology in this case, are leading the way in helping the URI community to be physically active and to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle,” said Lori Ciccomascolo, interim dean of the College of Human Science and Services.

Kinesiology Department Chair Deborah Riebe noted that important health benefits can be obtained by walking 30 minutes a day and walking doesn’t require any specialized equipment.

“The great thing about walking is it’s easy and can be a lot of fun when you walk with others,” Riebe said.

Sponsored by the College of Human Science and Services and the Department of Kinesiology, the weekly walks each last an hour and will be held until Dec. 4, 2013. The names of those who participate in all eight weekly walking sessions will be entered to win a raffle for a free pair of sneakers from Feet First Quality Footwear.
