Narragansett, R.I. — November 6, 2002 — The public is invited to attend a free Breakfast Lecture, sponsored by Friends of Oceanography, to be held on Wednesday, November 20, at 9 a.m. in the Coastal Institute Building on the URI Bay Campus. The lecture is part of a series featuring the research of URI Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) students.
The November 20 lecture, “A Storybook Named Pettasquamscutt: Environmental History from the Sediments of Narrow River” will be presented by geological oceanography graduate student Brad Hubeny of Cranston.
The focus of Hubeny’s presentation will be the geologic history of the Lower Basin of the Pettaquamscutt River since the last glaciation. This will include the origin of the site as well as a progress report of more recent environmental data obtained from sediment cores taken in 1999 and 2002.
A native of Hingham, Massachusetts, Hubeny received a B.S. in Geology from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Under the guidance of his major professor, Dr. John King, he studies paleoenvironmental reconstructions of aquatic environments and their watersheds from sedimentary records.

Friends of Oceanography is a community-based membership organization established in 1986 to support the educational and public programs of the URI Graduate School of Oceanography. Friends provides financial support of fellowships for GSO students, and other research, education, and outreach activities. The organization also helps sponsor a variety of special events such as oceanography lecture series, open houses at the Bay Campus, The JASON Project, and the National Ocean Sciences Bowl.
