ESSENCE magazine editor-in-chief to speak at URI

KINGSTON, R.I. — February 22, 1999 — Susan I. Taylor, editor-in-chief of ESSENCE magazine and senior vice president of Essence Communications, Inc. will speak at the URI Kingston campus on Saturday, Feb. 27. Free and open to the public, the lecture will be held at 3 p.m. in Edwards Auditorium. The topic of Taylor’s lecture is “Preparing Your Spirit for the New Millennium.” Taylor is a much-sought after speaker, a best selling author, as well as a former stage, screen, and television actress. Through her monthly column, In the Spirit, her numerous public appearances and extensive international travel, she has inspired millions who see her as a living symbol of the award-winning ESSENCE magazine. Taylor also is committed to serving and empowering the poor and to working with disadvantaged women and teenagers to help them realize their strengths and to take charge of their lives. Taylor is a graduate of Fordham University and a graduate student at Union Theological Seminary. She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, the American Society of Magazine Editors and Women in Communications. She is the recipient of numerous awards and citations as well as honorary doctorate degrees from the nation’s first college for African Americans, Lincoln University, and from Delaware State University, and Spelman College. The URI Multicultural Affairs and Equal Opportunity Committee, Student Senate, Student Entertainment Committee, and the Multicultural Center are sponsoring the talk.
