➢ $6 million, 7,000 sqft current Good Manufacturing Practice Facility (cGMP) that will open later in the fall, where best practices in cGMP technique and documentation can be taught to company employees and students, and where the college can partner with biomedical companies on the development and manufacture of human use pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.
➢ A CVS Caremark model pharmacy to be outfitted like a CVS pharmacy and used for teaching and to film educational videos.
➢ 3D visualization auditorium, a 12-seat, 3D animation production lab, and a 3D printer room so students can animate, visualize, then print 3D models to help them understand complex biomedical structures and interactions.
➢ Compounding Lab where students learn the art of pharmaceutical compounding to prepare personalized medications for patients.
➢ When completed, the extensive outdoor medicinal garden will contain plants that help prevent or cure everything from cold sores to cancer. The garden functions as an educational display of medicinal plants herbs and spices and also as a conservatory source of standard specimens.
➢ The building accommodates as many as 820 students, a 50 percent increase from 2006 when the $65 million bond was approved. The college’s most recent home, the 66,000-square-foot Fogarty Hall, was opened in 1964 and was designed for 235 students.
➢ Designed by Payette architects of Boston, the new pharmacy building is expected to earn a “Gold” rating in the U.S Green Building Council’s LEED® rating system. With advanced green technologies to minimize energy and water consumption, it is a sustainability model for science buildings nationwide.
About the College of Pharmacy
➢ The College of Pharmacy has brought in more than $83 million in federal and private research dollars since 2000.
➢ The College’s Health Care Utilization Management Center has helped save the state Department of Corrections in excess of $13 million since 2002.
➢ Recently a college professor won a highly competitive Center for Medicaid and Medicare Innovation grant that will deliver $14 million dollars to improve care for RI cognitively and physically impaired and Alzheimer patients.
➢ 54 full-time faculty members, 8 professional pharmacy staff, 19 support staff, 19 post docs, 85 graduate students, and 820 undergraduate students.
➢ Over the last five years, URI’s College of Pharmacy job placement rate has exceeded 95 percent each year.
➢ Pharmacists have gone from earning a four-year bachelor of science degree to a five-year bachelor’s degree and now a six-year doctor of pharmacy. The doctor of pharmacy is said to have 180 career options associated with it.
➢ A new four-year bachelor of science in the pharmaceutical sciences degree was created to be combined with an MS, MBA or PhD to steer students toward careers in drug research, discovery, development and manufacturing. Graduates in this program are also prepared to enter sales, marketing and management positions at large pharmaceutical companies or government regulatory agencies.
➢ Numerous pharmacy graduates go on to other professional degree combinations in law, medicine, dentistry and business.
➢ In clinical practice, pharmacists are providing care in a wide array of community, hospital, clinic, physician office and senior care practice settings working directly with other health care professionals on interdisciplinary teams.
➢ Pharmaceutical scientists are exploring the growing need for personalized medicine and the role that genetics plays in drug therapy effectiveness and toxicity.
