KINGSTON, R.I. – July 14, 2020 – Imagine spending your summer learning to sail on Narragansett Bay, skydiving in Newport, experiencing Block Island in a day, and perfecting your acting skills on a murder/mystery dinner train ride? Not only did University of Rhode Island alumna and NBC 10/WJAR-TV host Meaghan Mooney get to experience these exciting adventures, but she won an Emmy for it.
Last month, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences – Boston/New England Chapter awarded Mooney ’06 an Emmy for TV Host. The award recognized her work on NBC 10’s “Summer of Fun” series primetime show.
Mooney graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 2006 with a degree in Textile Marketing.
“URI had a tremendous influence on my career,” says Mooney, of Cranston. “With the assistance of a College of Business alumna and senior VP at Jockey’s Women in NYC, I secured an incredible internship after my junior year. That opportunity helped launch my career.”
Upon graduating, Mooney moved to New York City and spent more than five years working in numerous roles for Condé Nast Publications, including business development manager for Allure magazine. An opportunity to host videos for Brides magazine reignited her love for being in front of the camera – something she was familiar with as a child reporter for NBC 10’s “Kids Watch Ten.” Mooney went on to host live lifestyle TV shows in Denver, Washington, D.C., and Rhode Island.
Mooney joined WJAR-TV in 2017 and has since worked as the station’s traffic anchor on “Sunrise” and a fill-in news anchor on both “Weekend Sunrise” and “NBC 10 News at Noon.” She is also the visionary behind and co-host of “Studio 10,” which launched in September 2019. Prior to this segment, Mooney served as the host and co-producer of the station’s bi-annual “Winter of Fun” and “Summer of Fun” sales promotion segments, the latter of which won her the Emmy.
“Receiving the Emmy Award is very meaningful. The Emmys are the biggest awards in the television industry and to be recognized with one is truly an honor,” Mooney said.
