KINGSTON, R.I. — November 2, 2001 — Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Frank Williams will spend an afternoon at the University of Rhode Island’s main campus in Kingston on Thursday, Nov.8. His visit is sponsored by the Rhode Island Press Association and the University of Rhode Island’s Departments of Journalism and Political Science.
From 1:30 to 3 p.m., the chief justice will hold a workshop on covering the courts for about 15 reporters representing newspapers from around the state. District Court Associate Judge Robert K. Pirraglia and retired Superior Court Presiding Justice Anthony A. Giannini are also expected to be in attendance.
At 3 p.m. the chief justice will give a public address in Atrium I in URI’s Memorial Union. The topic of his talk is: “The Third Branch and the Fourth Estate: Finding Common Ground.” The talk will be followed by an informal reception in the Atrium.
Williams was appointed chief justice by Governor Lincoln Almond and unanimously confirmed by the state legislature in January 2001 after serving for nearly six years as associate justice of the Superior Court.
A practicing attorney for more than 25 years, Williams also has a long career in public service, serving as a solicitor and arbitrator for a number of Rhode Island towns and communities.
Williams is also one of the nations leading authorities on the life and times of Abraham Lincoln and one of the countrys most renowned Lincoln collectors, having amassed an unsurpassed private library and archive that ranks among the nations largest and finest.
