KINGSTON, R.I. — October 24, 2006 — Canadian singer/songwriter Ember Swift will speak and perform at the University of Rhode Island on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m. in Edwards Auditorium.

Her visit is part of a semester-long series for the URI Honors Colloquium, Songs of Social Justice: The Rhetoric of Music, which explores music as a means of expression, persuasion, and mobilization.

Swift is a talented and versatile singer-songwriter whose music addresses issues including globalization, consumer awareness, food politics, and feminism.. During her visit to the Kingston campus, Swift, who began writing songs at nine and performing them at 10, will discuss how music can fuel social change.

She has traveled Canada and the United States since 1997, spreading her social views and innovative folk-rock music. She has formed her own band and established an independent record label, Few’ll Ignite Sound. She has begun to collaborate with U.S. record companies to manage her music career.
