KINGSTON, R.I. — October 16, 2003 — Keith Flynn, acclaimed poet and songwriter, will offer a poetry writing workshop and reading of his own work at the University of Rhode Island on Oct. 23. His performance, free and open to the public, will take place in the Hoffmann Room in Independence Hall.
The poetry writing workshop is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. and consists of two parts. Flynn will first discuss the relationship between poetry and music, particularly the influence of blues and jazz and the power of action verbs and lyrics.
During the second half of his presentation, Flynn will provide feedback to students who have submitted their poetry in advance. If time allows, he will also discuss poems submitted during the demonstration, provided that the author brings enough copies for everyone present to participate. While the event is meant especially to enable student poets at URI to gain insight into their work, the general public is encouraged to attend and participate.
Flynn is also scheduled to give a reading of his work at 4 p.m., also in The Hoffmann Room. He will read from his new book, The Lost Sea (Iris Press, 2000), and selections from Nervous Splendor, a spoken-word and music compilation. A question and answer session will follow the performance.
Flynn has been the recipient of several awards for his writing, including the 1985 Sandburg Prize for Poetry, the ASCAP Emerging Songwriter Prize and the Paumanok Poetry Prize. His poetry has appeared in journals around the world, including The Colorado Review and The Cuirt Journal (Ireland). He has published three collections of his written work, as well as three albums with his rock band, The Crystal Zoo, for which he is the singer. Flynn is also the founder and managing editor of The Asheville Poetry Review.
