90 middle school students to build model wind turbines Friday, March 1

Event part of URI SMILE challenge

WHO: 90 middle school students (grades 6 through 8) from the University of Rhode Island’s SMILE program (Science and Math Investigative Learning Experiences), representing Central Falls, Pawtucket, South Kingstown, West Warwick, and Woonsocket school districts.


WHAT: 2013 Middle School Engineering Challenge Weekend. This year’s challenge will include designing, building and testing wind turbines, as well as learning about the impact of renewable energy on the environment.


WHEN: Friday, March 1, project design will take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., wind turbine building will take place from 12:15 to 2:15 p.m., and testing and redesign will take place from 3:15 to 7:30 p.m.


WHERE: University of Rhode Island Memorial Union Ballroom, 50 Lower College Road, URI Kingston campus.
